Berkmar High School Head Basketball Coach, Greg Phillips, is a student of the game. After suffering a lost early in the season to the Shiloh High School duo of Robert Carter (#24) and Trayvon Reed (#5), he formed a game plan for their next meeting. He instituted a method to manage the minutes (and subsequent fouls) of his center, Tim Rowe (#42). He would take Rowe out of the game when he got winded; those critical points when he was more prone to pick-up careless fouls. He would also use the speed and quickness of his smaller guards to frustrate Shiloh. This, combined with excellent passing, kept Berkmar in the game against the vaulted Shiloh offense.
When Reed went down with a knee injury right before halftime, the dynamic of the game changed. Shiloh shooting guard, Jordan Gaither (#1), along with Robert Carter, assumed the scoring load for the Generals. They made several runs, but could never quite put away the Patriots. Rowe was able to control the paint with key blocks down the stretch. In the end, a last second floater by Yonel Brown (#4) clinched the victory for the Patriots.
The Berkmar High School Patriots toppled the top-ranked Shiloh High School Generals on Shiloh’s home court by a score of 46 to 45.
