Street ball players are offensively minded. So, it’s not surprising that I get asked one question on a weekly basis: “How come you don’t have any pictures of me shooting the ball?” There are numerous factors, but probably the most important is the way a player shoots the ball. Simply shooting the ball above your […]

Cool and breezy weather is not very inviting for many outdoor basketball players. Some fellas decided to sleep in, rather than brave the elements this morning. Although the sun shined brightly over the court, it was clear that bare chested tattoos would not be seen today. Instead, sweat pants and hoodies were the order of […]

After 6 months of shooting at DeShong Park, the guys seem more like family than players.  Sure, they fight like cats and dogs sometimes, but that’s just what families do. Today, however, the action on the court seemed secondary to the atmosphere on the sidelines. Instead of obsessing over playing time, the fellas were content […]

Cool mornings, a preview of the fall, are perfect for outdoor sports. You don’t heat up as fast, and you generally don’t run the risk of overheating. Thus, the fellas showed up today with heavier layers or light jackets. It wasn’t until the sun was high overhead did they start to shed their shirts. As […]

Too many superstars showed up at DeShong Park this morning. Guys looking for their moment of fame on the website, hoping I’ll get nice shots of them to post. Not that I mind, I try to accommodate guys whenever possible.  I understand these are slices in time that you can’t get back. However, there was […]

No, DeShong Park did not finally get lights so you can hoop at night. The picture above was actually taken in broad daylight, just before the sun started going down. The nightime illusion was created by simply darking the background, and highlighting the sunshine. It’s amazing what you can do in post-processing. I generally don’t […]

The young ladies that play at DeShong Park on Sunday afternoons are coached by a very smart man. He knows that some of the best female basketball players to ever play the game, began by playing street ball against the boys. The ordeal is meant to toughen them up, strengthen their resolve.  With this objective […]

After spending the past weekend in the Carolinas, it was good to be back home again. Returning to my normal routine meant shooting at DeShong Park on Saturday mornings. I’m comfortable shooting there, and more importantly the fellas are comfortable with me being there. We have a working relationship that seems to benefit us both. […]

I couldn’t make it to DeShong Park for my normal Saturday shoot this week. So, I decided to come out on Sunday afternoon. I knew right away that things were going to be different… The speed at which these guys played was incredible.  Not only did I have to change my normal position on the […]

Like a family that occasionally has it’s disagreements, the guys at DeShong Park certainly have theirs. Back and forth arguments over things that seem trivial to the casual bystander. However, this is all part of a bigger plan.  Having spent much of my youth on the basketball courts, I understand that grandstanding is part of […]

I make it a habit to get out early on the mornings I plan on shooting at DeShong Park. This morning was no different. There by 9:00 AM, and the fellas were already putting in work. However, a few short hours later, one thing was abundantly clear – basketball is a young man’s game. The […]
